How to Treat MRSA in Your Nose

Instructions for Treating MRSA in Your Nose:

MRSA is a type of bacteria that can spread on skin and in the nose. Many people do not know they have MRSA bacteria because it is often harmless. During your pre-admission visit, we will test you for MRSA.

  • If your test is negative, you can discard this instruction sheet. You do not have to treat your nose for MRSA.
  • If your test is positive, we will take more steps to prepare for your surgery.
    • We will call to tell you your test shows that you have MRSA bacteria in your nose.
    • We will send a prescription for Bactroban® (mupirocin) ointment to the pharmacy of your choice.
    • If you have any questions, please call your doctor.
