Sugammadex injection

What is this medicine?

SUGAMMADEX (soo GAM ma dex) is used to reverse the effects of the muscle relaxants rocuronium and vecuronium. These drugs are given to patients during surgery.

 What may interact with this medicine?

This medicine may interact with the following medicines:

  • birth control pills, patches, rings, or injections such as:

    • Estrogen/progesterone pills
    • Injection (Depo-Provera)
    • Implants (Nexplanon)
    • Patches (Ortho Evra) 
    • Vaginal rings (NuvaRing) 
  • toremifene

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Birth control pills, patches, rings, or injections may not work properly while you are taking this medicine. Females of childbearing age (ages 12-60 years old) should do one of the following:

  • abstain from sex for 7 days after receiving this medicine.
  • use an additional, non-hormonal method of birth control (such as condoms or spermicidal jelly) for 7 days after receiving this medicine.You should continue to take your regular contraceptive at the same time. 

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reaction like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • breathing problems

  • signs and symptoms of a dangerous change in heartbeat or heart rhythm like chest pain; dizziness; fast or irregular heartbeat; palpitations; feeling faint or lightheaded, falls; breathing problems

  • signs and symptoms of low blood pressure or a slow heartbeat like dizziness; feeling faint or lightheaded, falls; unusually weak or tired

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • anxious

  • headache

  • muscle pain

  • nausea

  • pain at the injection site

  • stomach pain

  • vomiting
