After Penile Prosthesis Insertion Surgery

You had a penile prosthesis surgically implanted to treat your erectile dysfunction.  This device is either malleable (bendable) or inflatable depending on what you and your health care provider decided was best for you.  As you recover, follow the instructions below.

Activity

  • Do not drive until after your follow-up appointment (usually 7-10 days after surgery).

  • Do not have any sexual activity until your health care provider says it is okay.

Home Care

  • Take antibiotics and pain medicine as prescribed.

  • Apply cold packs and elevate the scrotum for 72 hours after your surgery when sitting or lying.  This will reduce the swelling and pain.

  • Do not manipulate the prosthesis components in any way until instructed to do so by your health care provider.

  • Remove any dressings 48 hours after surgery.

  • Do not take a tub bath.

  • You may shower after your dressing is off.  Dry incision completely by patting not rubbing.

  • Resume your usual diets as you can tolerate.

  • Resume your usual medications. If you take blood thinning medicines such as aspirin or Coumadin, first ask your doctor when you can start taking them again.

Follow-up

Keep all follow-up appointments.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Call your health care provider right away if you have any of the following:

  • Fever of 101.5°F (38.6°C) or higher

  • Redness, pus-like drainage, bleeding or swelling at the incision site

  • Inability to pass urine

  • Implant inflates without you trying to inflate it
