Kangaroo Care

Information for Parents

What is Kangaroo Care?

Kangaroo Care is a special way to hold your baby against your chest, allowing for skin-to-skin contact. Your baby will snuggle on your chest covered with a blanket, much like a baby kangaroo in its mother's pouch. Both mothers and fathers can participate in Kangaroo Care.

Why is Kangaroo Care good for my baby and for me?

We know that Kangaroo Care is good for parents and their babies. This is true for babies born early too! Some benefits can include:

  • More stable breathing, oxygen levels, and heart rate
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Decreased pain
  • Better growth and brain development
  • Better sleep
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Increased breastfeeding success
  • Increased breast milk supply
  • Stronger bond between parents and their baby
  • Lower maternal stress and depression

What are some tips to make Kangaroo Care successful?

  • Ask your baby's NICU team if he or she is medically ready for Kangaroo Care. If your baby is not ready, ask about other ways you can interact with your baby.
  • Make a plan with your baby's nurse. Ask about what time would be best for Kangaroo Care.
  • Come prepared for Kangaroo Care
    • Be prepared to snuggle for about one hour or more. This might not be the best time to bring your baby's brothers or sisters as your attention will be solely on your baby
    • Come with an empty bladder and a full stomach. Pump breast milk just before Kangaroo Care.
    • Wear clothing that is easy to open up in the front to allow for skin-to-skin contact
    • Avoid scented products including perfumes, lotions, and smoke
    • Both mothers and fathers can provide Kangaroo Care.
